Lessons Currently Offered (October 2007)

Air

Children will explore the capabilities of air using a hand fan. They will make predictions before testing different objects.

How animals travel 2

Children will discover what it takes for an animal to move (wings, legs, fins). They will sort animals according to how they travel.

Colors

Children will investigate primary and secondary colors. They will combine blue, red, and yellow to make new colors, recording their findings.

Fingerprints

Children will gain an understanding that they are unique. They will look at different types of fingerprints to find they are all unique.

Insects (no live insects)

Children will learn the parts of an insect. They will sort plastic bugs into two groups - insects and non-insects.

Magnets

Children will investigate the properties of magnets. They will be introduced to the concept of magnetic poles and learn through magnet play.

Shadows

Children will explore shadows using flashlights. They will change the size of the shadows by changing the position of the flashlight, similar to our sun.

Fossils

Children will gain an understanding of dinosaurs and fossils. They will look at real fossils and make a replica to take home.

Sink or Float?

Children will make predictions on objects that sink or float and test their predictions.

Sound

Children will discover how sound works. They will have opportunities to feel the vibration of sound waves, watch objects move because of sound waves, and match different sounds.

Static

Children will be introduced to the concept of static and electrons. They will learn about static through play, using balloons.

Water Cycle

Children will discover how the water cycle is like a circle. They will investigate clouds using foam and a water spray bottle.

Sense of sight

Children will explore their sense of sight using various toys to alter their sight (colored glasses, kaleidoscope, and binoculars). Children will also be introduced to Braille.

Nutrition

Children will gain an understanding of healthy foods through an introduction to the new food pyramid. They will pretend to shop for healthy food.

Animal Skins

Children will compare different animal skins (faux) to gain an understanding of different textures and patterns. They will match appropriate animal skins to various animals and compare the texture of the skins to each other.

Friction

Children use ramps, toy cars, and wooden blocks to explore friction.

Seasons

Children will discover how the four seasons have different temperatures that require appropriate clothing for each. They will also learn how trees change with the seasons.
